Progress on Equal Marriage Bill

The reality of equal marriage in England and Wales made a big step forward today as the House of Commons voted in favour of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill in a free vote. The Bill passed its Third Reading vote by 366 votes to 161 – a majority of 205.

The Bill will now have its Third Reading in the Commons before moving to the House of Lords in June.

The Bill will:

  • enable same-sex couples to marry in civil ceremonies
  • ensure those religious organisations that wish to do so can opt in to conduct marriage ceremonies for same-sex couples
  • protect those religious organisations that do not wish to marry same-sex couples from successful legal challenge
